Magnets for kids make the best topic in early-years science because the effect is invisible, immediate and slightly unbelievable. Two objects push each other apart with nothing in between, and no five-year-old accepts that without testing it repeatedly.
What a kit adds over a single magnet is the ability to compare. Different shapes and strengths in one box let children ask which is strongest, whether a bigger magnet is always stronger — it is not, which is a genuinely surprising result — and how many paper clips each will hold.
That last activity is quietly excellent measurement work. Counting paper clips is a real unit of magnetic force, and children produce comparable numbers they can argue about.
The other half of the lesson is sorting. Children test what sticks and what does not, and discover that not all metals are magnetic — an aluminium spoon and a steel one look identical and behave differently, which reliably breaks the rule they had just formed.
- Several shapes and strengths — supports comparison, not just demonstration
- Paper-clip counting gives a real measurable unit of strength
- Magnetic-versus-non-magnetic sorting breaks the easy rule
- Enough pieces for a group to work at once, 12 × 11.4 cm components
- Recommended ages 4–10
