Hand-held magnets for kids are hard to reason with, because the child’s hand moves and the result changes and nothing stays still long enough to compare.
Mounting the magnet on a base fixes one variable. With the magnet held steady, a child moves a metal object closer, a centimetre at a time, and finds the exact point where attraction takes over and the object jumps. That point is repeatable, which means it can be tested, predicted and argued about.
The idea underneath is that a magnetic field has a range rather than being simply on or off. Children who have only played with hand-held magnets tend to believe magnets either work or do not; the stand shows them a gradient.
It also allows genuinely hands-off observation. Objects can be left suspended or held at a distance while the group looks, discusses and predicts, without anyone’s hand shaking in the middle of it.
- Fixed base holds the magnet steady — one variable at a time
- Children find the exact distance where attraction takes over
- Shows that a field has range, not just on and off
- Supports prediction and repeat testing by a group
- Recommended ages 5–10
Part of the magnet range with the lab kit and magnet movers. For KG and primary science.
