Maracas come in pairs for a reason that is developmental as much as musical. A child holding one in each hand is doing bilateral work: both arms moving, sometimes together and sometimes alternately, which is a foundational coordination skill.
At 11.6 cm these are short enough that a toddler can actually manage two at once. Full-size maracas are too long — a small child holding one in each hand collides them, gives up, and drops one.
They are also the most immediately successful instrument in any nursery box. There is no technique to acquire; shaking produces sound instantly, and a child who has never held an instrument is playing within a second of being handed it. That first success is what makes them willing to try the harder instruments later.
Wooden bodies on turned handles, sealed and smooth, with the filling permanently enclosed.
