A hundred square on paper is a grid of digits. At a metre across on a wall, it becomes something a child walks up to, touches and traces — and the patterns inside it become visible in a way they are not at A4.

Counting in tens down a column, spotting that every number in one column ends the same way, finding the diagonal — these are the observations a hundred square exists to produce, and they happen far more readily when children can stand in front of it and point.

The chalk surface is what separates this from a poster. Children circle, cross out and mark their own patterns, then wipe it clean for the next group. It is a printed reference and a working surface at the same time.

The numerals are printed in mixed colours. The colouring is decorative rather than systematic — it does not encode tens or columns — so treat it as visual interest that helps children locate a number again, not as a built-in pattern key.
