Rectangular tables give you rows. Polygonal tables give you clusters — and in an early-years room, clusters are how children actually work.

This table seats six around a 120 × 62 cm top with angled ends. Two units pushed together form a continuous bench for a whole-class project; four arranged around a point make a hexagonal island where every child can see every other child. The shape does the classroom-management work that a rectangle cannot.

It stands on five legs rather than four. At 120 cm the span is long enough that a four-leg frame would flex in the middle under six children leaning in, so a fifth leg carries the centre. It is the difference between a table that stays flat for years and one that develops a dip you notice when children write on it.

The finish is maple — a light, warm tone that reflects rather than absorbs room light, which matters where fine work happens on the tabletop. The surface is sealed against paint, glue and the wet end of water play, and wipes down without staining. Legs are turned solid wood at 55 cm with plastic foot caps that protect flooring and damp scraping noise.
