Colour and shape are the first two attributes a child learns to sort by, and the interesting teaching happens when the two conflict — when the blue triangle could go with the blue things or the triangle things, and a child has to choose a rule and stick to it.
This carpet puts that problem on the floor at whole-body scale. Children stand on a shape rather than pointing at it on a worksheet, and “everyone on a circle, now everyone on something red” turns a sorting exercise into movement.
It works as a seating map in the same way any circle-time carpet does, with the difference that the places are named by mathematical property. “Sit on a square” is both an instruction and an assessment — you see immediately which children can do it.
This kids carpet is woven for institutional traffic, with a non-slip backing and bound edges that hold up where children pick at them.
- Colour and shape attributes for whole-body sorting work
- Doubles as a circle-time seating map with mathematical prompts
- Instructions double as quick informal assessment
