A round tambourine has to be gripped by its rim, which is a pinch grip. Children with weak hands, poor coordination or additional needs often cannot hold one securely for a whole song, and the instrument ends up on the floor.

The D shape gives a proper handle. A child wraps a whole fist around it, which is a far stronger and more stable hold, and can then shake or strike with real vigour without the instrument going anywhere.

Being headless changes the sound. There is no drum surface to strike, so this is purely a jingle instrument — bright, sustained and consistent. That is a simplification, and for a child who is working hard just to keep hold of the instrument, one clear sound is better than three options.
