Description

Asking a four-year-old how they feel usually produces “good” or a shrug. Not because the feeling is absent, but because the vocabulary is not there yet and the question is hard.

Drawing bypasses that. A child chalks a face, and staff have a starting point — something visible to ask a follow-up question about, from a child who could not have answered the original question.

The board also normalises the whole subject. A permanent fixture about feelings, used routinely, makes emotional talk an ordinary part of the day rather than something that only happens when a child is in trouble or upset.

Being chalk rather than fixed images matters. Pre-printed emotion cards offer a menu of five feelings; a blank surface lets a child draw something that is not on anyone’s list, which is often the more accurate answer.

The 80 cm round format is deliberately soft-edged and non-institutional, and it can be mounted indoors in a calm corner or outdoors in a quiet part of the yard.

  • Drawing gives non-verbal children a way to check in
  • Routine use normalises emotional talk outside of crisis moments
  • Blank chalk surface, not a fixed menu of five feelings
  • 80 cm round; indoor calm corner or outdoor quiet area
  • Recommended ages 3–8
