The locks on this board are real hardware, and that is the point. A child who works a bolt here can work the bolt on the classroom gate, because it is the same object performing the same action.

Each mechanism demands a different hand movement: a bolt slides, a hook lifts and swings, a latch presses and rotates. Together they cover most of the small-hardware actions a child will meet, and each one has an unambiguous success state — it is either open or it is not, so a child knows immediately whether they have done it.

That self-evident feedback is why children persist with this board without adult attention. There is nothing to explain and nothing to mark; the mechanism itself says yes or no.

At 40 × 30 cm with a 0.9 cm backing board it is substantial enough to stay flat on a table while a child pulls at a stiff latch, and it can be wall-mounted at child height in a corridor.
