That matters for the quality of the play. Children place a cow on green and it is in a field; the same cow on natural sand is somewhere ambiguous, and the story has less to attach to.

Mixed with blue it makes the boundary between land and water; mixed with yellow it shifts toward a paler spring green, which is a subtler mixing exercise than the primaries.
