Description

As magnets for kids go this is the unusual one: the crane lifts magnetically, and that single design choice turns a role-play toy into a science question.

Swing the arm over a load and some things come up while others stay put. A child who has just watched one object lift and the next one refuse has a genuine puzzle in front of them, and it is a puzzle with a findable answer: what is it made of?

That makes it a sorting activity disguised as construction play. Children test load after load, discover that only some materials respond, and arrive at the magnetic-versus-non-magnetic distinction by evidence rather than instruction.

The second question is angle. A load that will not lift from one position sometimes lifts from another, because the magnet has to meet the part that attracts. Turning the object to find its magnetic face is a spatial problem children solve by trial.

Built in beech at 24 × 8.5 × 22 cm, and it connects to something children see constantly — cranes are on the skyline of every Saudi city.

  • Lifts by magnet — some loads rise, some refuse
  • Magnetic versus non-magnetic sorting reached by evidence
  • Finding the attracting face is a real spatial problem
