The middle-pitch instrument is the one to buy first, because it is the only one in the family that stands on its own.
Its range sits where children’s singing voices sit, which means a melody played on it can be sung along to directly, without transposing anything. Nursery rhymes, national songs, the tunes a class already knows — all of them fall comfortably in this register.
That register is also the easiest for children to hear accurately. Very low notes blur together to an untrained ear and very high ones are piercing; the middle is where a child can tell two adjacent notes apart, which is the prerequisite for any real pitch work.
In a full ensemble it takes the melody while the low instrument holds the ostinato and the high one adds decoration — the standard classroom arrangement, and the reason this is the pitch that runs out of stock first.
- Range matches children’s singing voices — play and sing together
- Adjacent notes are easy for children to distinguish by ear
- Takes the melody line in classroom ensemble arrangements
- The right single-instrument purchase if buying only one
- Recommended ages 4–10
Part of a three-instrument family with the low and high pitch xylophones. For KG and primary music rooms.
