Twenty is the right ceiling for most early-years children. A hundred square is overwhelming when a child is still securing the numbers to ten, and the extra digits are visual noise rather than a stretch target.

This board stops at twenty and gives each numeral more room. Children find a number without scanning a hundred cells, and the ones they are working on are large and unambiguous.

The black and white treatment is deliberate. Colour coding helps with pattern-spotting in a hundred square, but at this stage the objective is recognising and ordering the numeral itself, and a plain high-contrast presentation keeps attention on the shape of the digit.

High contrast also holds up better outdoors in bright sun, where colour-printed panels wash out and fade fastest.

At 80 × 80 × 0.3 cm it is the smaller board in the range, which suits a nursery yard wall where the metre-square version would dominate.
