Most children can name more fruit than vegetables. Fruit is sweet, eaten whole and appears in lunch boxes; vegetables tend to arrive cooked, cut up and mixed into something else, so they are harder to recognise and harder to name.
That gap makes a vegetable set the more useful teaching resource of the two. Handling a whole carrot, a whole pepper, a whole aubergine gives children the intact form they rarely see on a plate, and the naming follows from the handling.
The set also supports the classification work that vegetables do better than fruit: things that grow underground versus above, things eaten raw versus cooked, leaves versus roots. These are real categories children can reason about and disagree about productively.
