This block has two slots of different lengths, each producing its own pitch, so a single child with a single beater can play a two-note figure. That is the smallest possible step from keeping time to playing a tune, and children hear the difference in what they are doing.

The ridged surface adds a third sound. Dragging the beater across the ridges gives a rasping scrape entirely unlike the struck tones, which extends the instrument into sound-effect territory — frogs, creaking doors, footsteps in a story.
