The typical lacing toy is a flat board, and a flat board teaches threading rather than lacing. A real shoe is a three-dimensional object approached from above at an awkward angle, and that geometry is a significant part of why tying laces is hard.

This one is shoe-shaped. The child works over the top of a raised form, crossing the lace from side to side exactly as they would on their own trainer, so the practice transfers directly instead of approximately.

Working on a separate shoe also removes the time pressure that makes learning at the door impossible. A child practising at a table has no coat queue behind them and no adult waiting, and can repeat the hardest step twenty times.

At 21 × 9 × 10.4 cm the wooden form is scaled slightly large for a child’s hand, which helps — the holes and the gap between them are more generous than on a real shoe, so the child succeeds at a simplified version before facing the real one.
