Working Mouth Animal Hand Puppets | Moving Jaw Puppet Set

A puppet with a fixed face is a soft toy on a hand. A puppet whose mouth opens is a character, and children can tell the difference immediately.

The working jaw is operated by the child’s fingers and thumb, which means the mouth moves when they choose — and children synchronise it to their own speech almost without being taught. That synchronisation is the whole illusion. The puppet talks; the child is just holding it.

For speech and language work this matters practically. A child watching a puppet’s mouth open and close is watching an exaggerated model of their own articulation, and staff use the jaw to emphasise syllables, stretch sounds and mark the beats of a word.

The grip also does hand work: opening and closing a puppet mouth repeatedly is a thumb-against-fingers action that builds exactly the opposition strength used later for scissors and pencils.
